I've devised a table to pretend I am a mid-arm quilter. Here's what I did. I saw a YouTube video that looked interesting. Marguerita McManus made a portable sewing table using foam insulation on top of a folding table. I figured I can do that with some modifications. Here is the video of what she did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAS25v3ZTk0, I hope that works. If not, search YouTube, Quilting, How to Build a Cheap Sewing & Quilting Table #1 and #2. I got the information I needed on the #2 video.
The modifications I made was to put my Janome 6500 machine parallel to the edge of my 24 x 48 table, then I put a 24 x 60 board on top. I use that as an ironing board. Placed my machine on one edge, placed my foam insulation on with a cutout for my machine, placed a vinyl on top, cut out the needle area and taped it all down. My explanation may be a bit confused, so a picture says a thousand words.

Does this work? I have a Janome MC9000 and would like to try this. Saw the video you mentioned before and was going to try that but if your idea works I will go that route instead. Does it make it easier to quilt bigger pieces? Thanks.
Thanks for posting. What a great idea! I also have a Janome. Do you quilt from the back of the machine pulling the fabric toward the back of the arm or from the front pushing the fabric back? Either way, it looks like a great project to try!
This is so cool! What a wonderful idea! I wish I would have thought of this b/f laying down the cash for my Hinterberg frame!
Hi there! I am glad you liked my videos and modified the idea to fit your needs -- thank you for sharing!! Here's a link to the first video

Happy Quilting! Marguerita
dillysnana, Yes it works. You may have to modify it for the height of your machine so everything lays flat. I think it helps with bigger quilts. Even tho, my 6500 has the larger harp area, this way my quilt had plenty of room to slide back and forth. Hope this helps. e-mail me direct with any other questions. im_quilter@yahoo.com
Susan, I started quilting in the center. My quilt was about 56" wide, so there wasn't too much bunching. I was able to make feathers. The quilt I did on this setup is on my blog. It is the Kaffe Fasset fabric quilt. Hope this helps. im_quilter@yahoo.com
